1. Privacy Policy
This policy explains what personal data Scale at Speed Publishing collects, why, how we protect it, and the rights you have under UK data protection law.
Who we are
Scale at Speed Publishing (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a service operated by Do Your Bit Limited, trading as Scale at Speed Publishing. Do Your Bit Limited is the data controller for personal data processed through this site.
- Registered in England & Wales, company number 08130003.
- Registered office: Suite 2A, 7th Floor PF, City Reach, 5 Greenwich View Place, London E14 9NN.
- Data protection contact: [email protected].
The data we collect
- Your email address — used to create your account and send you one-time sign-in links. We do not use passwords.
- Your project data — the information you choose to enter into the roadmap: book details (title, subtitle, author/pen name, co-authors, genre, target date, notes), which steps you tick or mark as not applicable, and any notes you add to a step.
- Limited technical data — standard server and security logs (e.g. IP address, browser type, timestamps) generated when you load the site, handled by our hosting and security providers to keep the service running and secure. With your consent, we also use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used so we can improve it — if you don’t consent, no analytics cookies are set. We don’t use advertising trackers.
We only ask for the email address needed to sign you in. Everything else is content you actively choose to enter, and you can leave any field blank.
How and why we use it
| What we do | Lawful basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|
| Create your account and store your roadmap so it persists across devices | Performance of a contract (providing the service you asked for) |
| Send one-time sign-in / email-confirmation links | Performance of a contract |
| Keep the service secure, prevent abuse, and fix faults | Legitimate interests (running a safe, reliable service) |
| Respond to messages you send us | Legitimate interests |
| Measure and improve how the site is used (Google Analytics) | Consent — only after you accept on the cookie banner; you can withdraw it any time |
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Service providers (processors)
We use a small number of trusted providers to run the service. They process data on our instructions only:
| Provider | Purpose | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Account authentication and secure database storage of your project | Cloud hosting (data centre region configured for the project) |
| Postmark (Wildbit) | Sending sign-in and confirmation emails | USA |
| Cloudflare | Content delivery, TLS encryption and security/abuse protection | Global edge network |
| Google (Analytics & Tag Manager — Google Ireland Ltd) | Consent-based usage analytics, loaded via Google Tag Manager | EU / USA |
| Hostwinds | Web hosting of the public pages | — |
Where a provider processes data outside the UK, that transfer is covered by appropriate safeguards (such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement / Addendum or Standard Contractual Clauses).
How long we keep it
We keep your account and project data for as long as your account is active so the roadmap is there when you return. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your project data and account record (residual copies in routine backups are overwritten on our providers’ normal backup cycles). Security and email-delivery logs are retained for a short period by our providers and then deleted.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have the right to:
- access a copy of your personal data;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased (“right to be forgotten”);
- restrict or object to certain processing;
- data portability — receive your data in a usable format; and
- withdraw consent at any time where we rely on it.
To exercise any of these, email [email protected]. We respond within one month. Much of your data is also directly visible and editable inside the app, and you can use Print / PDF there to export a copy of your roadmap and notes at any time.
How we keep your data secure
- Sign-in is passwordless — a one-time link to your email — so there is no password to be guessed or leaked.
- Each writer’s project is isolated at the database level (row-level security), so the database physically refuses to return anyone else’s data.
- All traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS).
- The app is blocked from search engines and AI crawlers so private projects stay out of search results.
Children
This service is intended for authors aged 18 and over and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service develops (for example, when we add the editor marketplace). We’ll change the “last updated” date above and, for significant changes, let signed-in users know.
2. Terms of Use
These terms govern your use of the Scale at Speed Publishing website and roadmap app. By using the site you agree to them.
The service
Scale at Speed Publishing provides a guided, informational self-publishing roadmap: a checklist of steps with suggested tools and resources, which you can tick off and annotate. It is provided by Do Your Bit Limited. We may offer the roadmap free of charge for an introductory period; we’ll make any future pricing clear before it applies to you.
Your account and responsibilities
- You’re responsible for the email account you sign in with — anyone with access to that inbox can access your roadmap.
- You must provide accurate information and use the service lawfully.
- You must not misuse the service: no attempting to access other users’ data, disrupting or probing the service, scraping, or uploading unlawful content.
Your content
The book details, notes and progress you enter remain yours. You grant us only the limited permission needed to store and display that content back to you so the service works. We don’t claim ownership of your work.
Our content and intellectual property
The roadmap structure, text, design, branding and the “Scale at Speed Publishing” and “The Proposition Formula” names are owned by or licensed to Do Your Bit Limited. You may use the roadmap for your own publishing projects but may not copy, resell or redistribute it without our permission.
Third-party tools and links
The roadmap recommends and links to third-party products and services (editors, design tools, retailers, registries and so on). These are suggestions to help you, not endorsements or guarantees. We don’t control those providers, aren’t responsible for them, and their prices, features and availability change — always confirm current details on the provider’s own site. Any contract you enter into with a third party is between you and them.
Not professional advice
The roadmap is general guidance to help you organise your self-publishing journey. It is not legal, tax, financial or professional publishing advice, and timings and fees are indicative. For decisions with legal or financial consequences (for example copyright, contracts or tax), please take appropriate professional advice.
Availability and disclaimer
We work to keep the service available and accurate, but we provide it “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law. We may change, suspend or discontinue features at any time.
Limitation of liability
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited (such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud). Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, loss of profits, data or anticipated savings, or for losses arising from your reliance on third-party tools or on the roadmap’s general guidance.
Suspension and termination
You can stop using the service and ask us to delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end access if these terms are breached or where necessary to protect the service or other users.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England & Wales, and the courts of England & Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, subject to any non-waivable rights you have as a consumer in your country of residence.
3. Cookies & local storage
We keep this simple. We use only essential cookies to sign you in and make the app work. With your consent, we also use Google Analytics cookies to understand how the site is used — these stay off until you choose Accept on the cookie banner, and you can change your mind at any time. We never use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
What we store
| What | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in session token | Browser local/session storage (set by Supabase) | Keeps you signed in securely after you click your email link |
| Your roadmap cache | Browser localStorage | Loads the app instantly and keeps a working copy on your device if you briefly go offline |
Security cookie (e.g. __cf_bm) | Set by Cloudflare | Distinguishes humans from bots to protect the site; expires quickly |
Analytics cookies (_ga, _ga_<id>) — only set if you accept | Set by Google Analytics | Measures visits and how the site is used, to help us improve it |
The sign-in and security items are strictly necessary, so they don’t need consent. The analytics cookies are optional and load only after you choose Accept on the banner — we don’t set any marketing or cross-site tracking cookies. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time using Cookie settings.
Managing it
You can clear this data at any time via your browser settings (clear site data / cookies for publishing.scaleatspeed.com). Doing so will sign you out and remove the local cache; your saved roadmap stays safe in your account and reloads when you sign back in.
